Four Ways to Make Self-Love a Priority

Spread the love

Lamplight life will always be open to guest posts that help women take care of themselves better. With that in mind, here is one highlighting four ways to make self-love a priority.

“Society is lying to us. They have been lying to us for years, decades, and centuries. As women, we’re taught to love hard, forgive quickly, and take care of everyone except ourselves. We’re encouraged to be selfless and to put others before ourselves.

The expectations are not mutual. They’re one-side, with fine print side-effects including resentment, bitterness, burnout, anxiety, depression, and unworthiness.

Who are these people telling women that WE must love others at the expense of ourselves? Who are they?

Whoever they are, they’ve sold us a lie, that we must take responsibility in changing- for the wellbeing of ourselves and the next generation. Here are four ways you can be intentional in making self-love a priority.

Dedicate time to yourself.

I can hear the busy moms and entrepreneurs, growing humans and businesses say, “HOW can we do that when we only have 24-hours in the day?” It’s as simple as blocking time out on your calendar and committing to protect that time. If we schedule business calls, doctor’s appointments, and coffee dates, choose to add you to your list of priorities. It doesn’t matter the time of day, and start small with 10 or 15 minutes. As you honor that time, you will become more familiar with the concept that you matter too.

Create a personal ritual.

Are you a lover of art? Do you enjoy a nice pedicure or a warm bath filled with light candles and bubbles? Celebrate the end (or start) of your workweek with something that tells your mind, body, and spirit, “thank you for all you do.” The worst thing to do is expect this treatment from others when we fail to give it to ourselves. So, remind yourself that you’re appreciated. Others will begin to follow your lead.

Get moving.

There is a direct correlation between your health and your self-image. When we move our bodies, we release chemicals like endorphins and serotonin that improve mood. Feeling good on the inside will shine on the outside. Be intentional with the movement of your body! If you’re not a gym or pilates person, blast your favorite song in your house and dance to the music!! That, too, is movement.

Invest in yourself.

One of the best things you can do involves investing in yourself. No matter the size of the investment, the action is a subconscious act that tells yourself, “I am worth it.” Make yourself your favorite dish, register for a new Meet Up group in your area with like-minded women, or take a course that helps you with self-care. As the Founder of Find Body Freedom, which is a program designed to help women discover their innate wisdom, my clients commit to learning how to choose themselves. I teach them decades of my knowledge as a licensed social worker and years of living this journey of learning how to love the woman I am created to be—without the pressures of society.

Take baby steps and focus on each action instead of the grand vision. By doing so, you will create a habit of self-care that reminds yourself that you are indeed worthy of love.”
